Our history

About the congregation in brief

There have been Reformed Calvinist congregations and schools in Debrecen since the beginning of the Reformation.

Our parish is the territory that lies to the west of Füredi and Hadházi Streets and expands to the Big Forest. It consists of houses, detached houses and blocks of flats.

The original home of our congregation, the so-called ’University Church’ with 800 seats and many ground floor rooms, became State property without a legal contract under the pressure of dictatorship. The congregation was forced to move to a much smaller building in 1975.

The church went through many trials but grew stronger and stronger. We had an organ built in 1980 and a church in 1985. The vicarage was made bigger in 1990 and we put a fence around the church building in 1997.

The new church building which has 280 seats altogether has been gradually outgrown by the congregation. Since putting in 160 extra chairs plus building a new choir area in 1995, two sermons have had to be held each Sunday to enable the whole congregation to attend.

After the change of the political regimes, as a result of years of struggle, our original church building was returned to the Reformed Calvinist Diocese of Eastern Hungary. Plans are being made for the future considering the needs of both our congregation and the youth mission.

In order to strengthen missionary work we have created the system of small groups for people of different ages, social status, knowledge and faith. Now we have 25 small groups with 240 members. In local government schools and kindergardens we have 27 groups with 330 members. We have a one week all age camp every summer with about 300-350 people attending from the church.

With the missionary work rapidly growing there was need for more leadership input, and since1997 an assistant minister and 20 group leaders have been helping us in this work. We keep seeking for new opportunities for Biblically based missionary work.

Lajos Püski and his wife Judit have been leading the church since the Pentecost of 1990, and assistant pastor, Melinda Csinády has been in sevice since the summer of 2005.
